Electron transport chainI am struggling with a question about the effect of a strong electron acceptor has on the electron transfer chain, and how this affects the pH. The question is: You suspect an electron transport chain in your isolated thylakoids. Thus, you tested the effect of adding strong electron acceptors. What impact would this have on the pH shift if the electron acceptor was able to out compete plastoquinone for electrons?
My initial guess after reading chapter 10 of the eighth edition Campbell & Reece Biology text book, is that the pH would go up do to the electron acceptor stopping the chain of electrons and causing a build up of protons that raise the pH. To me this sounds totally wrong and I think I am missing something. Could I get a little help on better understanding the transport chain and its effect on pH shifts?
Well, I think, you are on right way. Definitelly, the acceptor will substitute the Q and as it probably won't transfer the electrons futher in the electron transport chain, there won't be any pH gradient
