what butterfly is this?

Postby surajitkoley » Sat Sep 26, 2009 12:49 pm

Hi, after a long break I return here to seek your help once again. :D But before I post my question I wish you all the best (it's festive time here in West Bengal, India and we are celebrating DURGA PUJA (Goddess Durga).

Now back to the business - I attach here a photo of a butterfly that I shot a few days ago, but couldn't identify. It's about an inch in size and please note its mimicry mechanisms. Could it be a variety of club-silverline butterflies?
Thank you and regards

Today I was browsing http://www.biolib.cz/en/main/ gallery. What I gathered there is that it (the butterfly) may be a member of the family Lycaenidae, subfamily - Lycaeninae (asian sapphires).

Somewhat similar species images can be found at -
1) http://www.biolib.cz/en/taxonimage/id73 ... 368&type=1
2) http://www.biolib.cz/en/taxonimage/id35 ... 368&type=1

or you can have some from West Bengal (my home-state) at-

Glad you guys figured out the identity of the butterfly. In the future, Bugguide.net is good resource for identifying insects.
