Heart transplant

Does the person who donates a heart has to have the same blood group as the recipient?

Yes. There are fourteen different blood types. To transfuse blood, both the ABO and the RH factors need to match (A+ can give to A+ patients). To transplant a heart, all fourteen blood types need to match, rather than just the two.

@Kyle
What exactly causes the subgroups? I mean what causes the difference between A1+ and A2+?
I never could find this in any book

Kyle will not be happy about this but I want to know about them too. :)
@Kyle:
Calm down Kyle. ;) I know it will take a bit (!?) long to write them all but, maybe you can give a brief description. :)
