Need help with this one. What is it?

Postby deckard » Sat Jul 18, 2009 5:54 pm

My dad and I were on vacation in Wisconsin when we came across this apparently dead life form.

We were on the banks of a freshwater river (forgive me, I don't know the name of the river). The pics aren't that good, they were taking in 1984. We've always wondered what the heck this thing is.

The insides were a clear membrane while the outside was a tougher almost scaly rind. It did not smell, so I'm guessing it died recently.

First thing I thought was "lung" Looks like an organ of some kind.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop.

Its a cluster of frog eggs in the early stages. It looks like one animal, but in reality its a group of them. I have seen them around fresh water lakes on several ocassions.

Thanks Soldier1969, I think you are right, they are eggs of some kind of frog or salamander. I'm trying to find similar photos online with no luck. At least I know now that it's not an alien pod...

Oh wait, I take that back. I did some more research and found that it might be Bryozoa Phylactolaemata. These pics match it almost perfectly:
