Urine infections

my daughter is 12yrs old she has been havin urine infections for years, she has been to hospital twice once for ultra sound of kidneys which came back normal,and the second time the doc just asked her whwt medicine she was on, told me she was under weight,and sent her leaflets about sex and how she should wash after sex(she only 12 she isnt haven sex for gods sake) and there is always blood white cells protein and glucose in it,she has spent time in hospital for this,is on a 6mth course of Trimethoprim 50ml, which she has every night, she was ok for the 1st month did not take a UTI at all. but now she has had two UTIs in four weeks and now suspected thursh. can anyone help? my gp keeps telling us that they have to find what kind of bug it is,but is not testing the hospital sends us back to doc????????????

6 months ??? Really! This drug should be taken for 10 days. 6 months on a antibiotic...holy cow!!! I must have misread your post.

Thrush too, sounds like her immune system is in trouble.

I am with Lobo on this one, get another doc.

Agreed with above.
And one thing you can do is to offer her to drink cranberry juice. The tannins in the juice are preventing bacterial attchment in the urinary tract. That won't cure her, but there are no side effects (but it is very sweet) and it might help reduce the reoccurence of the colonizing bacteria.

An inadequate immune system would explain the recurrences, as would also resistance to the antibiotic from taking the same one for so long. Maybe her nutrition needs improving? (You did say she’s losing weight.) Even if she eats healthily, her body may not be metabolising the food properly and this would in turn affect her immune system. I advise getting a new doctor ASAP. the bacteria in her body is no doubt out of balance due to repeated antibiotic treatment and it becomes a vicious cycle.
Have you tried alternative treatment, such as an N.D
(Naturopathic Doctor)?

They are now selling the brand name Yakult in US stores. Funny thing is, I saw this product being sold in the Philippines back in the 80's.

That Yakult as far as I remember contains Lactobacillus shirota strains.

kirsty has now been back to the docs twice with UTIs one on the 23rd of march,tested urine, results came back the same, blood, protein,white cells,glucose,she was told to stop take'n the Trimethoprim and to take Cefalexin 5ML four times a day and finish the course, then to go back on the Trimethoprim..she has just finished the Cefalexin 3oth march and what do we have this morning another UTI.. the doc now has her on CO-Amoxiclav 62mg three times aday.. I have asked for her to be sent to the causeway hospital as this hospital deals with this type of thing. fingers crossed it will be ASAP. I took the advise of cranberry juice she has been drinking this none stop since

Well Cranberry juice is sadly not 100% efficient, and it seems that whatever your daughter have is quite resistant.
Previous course of Trimethoprim might have selected for resistant infection, which is why it might not be efficient anymore. Cefalexin is a completely different antibiotic, but the quick reapparition of a new UTI just after the end of the treatment is worrying. It seems that identifying the cause of the infection (culture and test for antibiotic resistance of the bugger) should be done quickly. Your best chance is indeed the hospital if your GP is reluctant to collect the sample and have it sent to a microbiology lab.

Thanks again everyone for your help,kirsty has now yet again took an other UTI while on the Co Amoxiclav, took her and samle yet again to doctors and she was seen by a stand in doc, who told me enough is enough and has asked the causeway hospital can they see her ASAP.. Thank god at last........
