study and listen to the music at the same time

When in college, it is best to use music to block out the improper grammar and idiocy from near by students that talk in the library.

Depending on a situation, some people will listen to music, learn how to block it out, and then adjust their subvocalization to be "louder" than the music playing

yup agree to dat. i blast music with earphone to block the surrounding noises (vehicles, others speech, etc..) and i could concentrate more on the things i m studying by making it "louder" than music inside my mind. Normally, i will finish studying without noticing how long the music has been playing..

however, sometimes when familiar tunes are played i'll just go along with the music and have a break:D.

I study to music but I barely hear it.
If I am memorizing something I tend to pace and talk to myself.

Depending on what I am reading I sometimes do not read sub-vocally. I turn off the "voice".

Regarding the computer it does nothing at the same time just so fast it seems to be at the same time. Everything breaks down into clock cycles. Thus the processor will make IE run 1 nanosecond and Word the next. Newer processors are actually 2 processors but, that is another story.

I'm also amongst those who can't study without a "back ground" music, helps me to drag my mind off things that are out of the 'strictly studying' zone

Now that we are into it, anyone find it easy to understand the notes and all the stuff when u r upside down or on top of a tree (thinking if opuntia is asking a weird question? well, then just imagine how weird i could eb coz taht's my favourite ways of studying!!!!)

i've never really studied upside down or on a tree but i'll give it a shot and tell u about it!!

and i can study with music especially solving math problems but i cant concentrate if i have to memorize anything!!

I would think that if the music had lyrics this could be a factor. If you are reading words and someone is singing something else it could be a nuisance. On the other hand if it is just instrumental like mozart or something then it may help. I am sure studies on this must have been published.

Actually, I find it's difficult for me to concentrate without music.
In my case, it's actually a matter of shutting out everything else. Outside noises irritate me to no end when I try to focus what little concentration powers I possess, and listening to music helps drown it out. It's a coping mechanism of sorts.
And it miiiight have something to do with Sensory Intergration Disorder. Maybe.

Some people state they can listen to music and study up to par or even better. But for me, that is not true. I do not know how a person trying to study can focus better when there is another stimulus going on (in this case music). When music is being played or any other auditory stimulus when focusing on something else, your brain is now paying attention to multiple things, which means we are not focusing to our full potential to studying, instead, we are focusin on multiple things.

A good comparison would be the bans of using cell phones while driving in Britain and the attempt to do it in Canada ( which has not yet had an effect). Wonder why they banned it? This topic relates to the music and studying topic. Instead of you fully focusing on the road, your brain has to compensate for two things, which means you are not focusing on the road to your full potential, due to the distraction of another stimulis (talking on the phone). Thus, you are more prone to accidents while driving.

This comparison deals with the same ideas. When your brain deals with more stimuli all at once, less ability to pay attention to detail, simply because your brain is processing more things.

I usually do some maths exercises while listening to Beethoven's or Chopin's piano solos. It's actually quite relaxing, though I don't like studying other subjects (such as History and Geography) and listening to music at the same time.

Just as an interesting note, I personally study for everything better with music playing. I don't know why, and it doesn't matter to me what type of music is playing, but I understand everything, and study much better with music (much to the annoyance of my roommates)
