Removing a turtle's shell

Is it possible to remove a turtle's shell without killing it?

Note: I'm not planning on doing this, just something me and my friend were discussing.

Look at the shell as part of a turtle's skeletal system. Its backbone is fused into the shell so, no you cannot take off a shell without killing it.

Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines (all living turtles belong to the crown group Chelonia), most of whose body is shielded by a special bony or cartilagenous shell developed from their ribs. It is not possible to take off the shell without killing it.
