I was told the same thing. However, whether it's true or not, I don't know.

...so I did some research.

I spoke with an oculoplastic specialist who says dark circles or "bags" under the eyes are usually a hereditary trait -- that is, it runs in families. However, the bags may appear worse in people who smoke or who suffer from allergies. So, for some people, the answer to making dark bags vanish might be to stop smoking or to seek out allergy treatment.
There currently is no medication or surgical procedure that can get rid of dark areas under the eyes. However, a make-up artist may be able to advise you on cosmetic products to cover up or minimize the bags.

Viable source or not, remains a mystery.

And that darkness is caused by venous congestion around the eye. Those vessels fill with blood and cause that nasty-looking darkness.

I have to really cake on the concealer most mornings to cover my circles up. :/

If you have allergies or chronic sinusitis, you can get them treated, and it should go away with time. If you don't have any such problems, you're out of luck -- it's hereditary, and you'd only be able to minimize the appearance of them with makeup.

Take most ads you see for "miracles" with a grain of salt, btw.

They are saying that putting rings of cucumber or potato above the eyes helps. Maybe there is substance in these vegetables fights darkness.

I always thought dark circles were caused by excessive rubbing of the eyes, where blood vessels are destroyed and excessive blood clotting occurs.
