Intertidal Ecosystem Help'm looking for adaptations and the selective pressures that caused them for the Giant California Sea Cucumber Parastichopus californicus.
So far I have found The Sea Cucumber competes for food with other invertebrates. Adaptation- Sea Cucumbers position themselves in a current of water there plankton and organic matter flow by and are caught with their tentacles. Sea Cucumber are slow organisms, and cannot flee quickly from predators It can rear up and swim with slow undulations when threatened. It can eviscerate, or remove from it’s body, part of its internal organs and escape while its predator is distracted by this meal. It has no hard outer shell, and are therefore pargeted by predators, such as crabs. The animal responds violently when it feels threatened by predators. It can defend itself by turning its respiratory organs inside out and forcing them out of its cloaca , then discharging long sticky threads from the walls of those organs which can entangle and paralyze its predator. I know that once every year it's internal organs are eviscerate and regenerated, but I cannot find out why. If anybody knows what another adaptation is I would be very much appreciated.
