Beetles are definitely the best, especially the Rhinocerous beetles found in coconut trees. Their grip is deadly. They look menacing and like an armored tank. Their horn curved and strong, blunt though.

They are strong and hard, not fragile, so we can give that occasional rough touch.

Big enough to do some tricks.

Too slow to run out of your hands, they can fly but not much and these guys never leave the safety of your hand. You can go on handling these guys for hours and can have them behind your ears for the whole day.

Trick 1: Put your beetle on a sheet of soiled paper. Tilt the paper and watch him slide across and get hold of the edge, just when you think hes going over. haha thats some stunt you thought only Tom Cruise can do.

Trick 2 : Ask you friend to close their eyes with their hands extended and wait for a surprise gift. Once you see the free palm drop this big fella, he will hold on to the hand for another hour, unless of course your friend knows about beetle behaviour. Tell you what, it could get a little painfull...heh but who cares.

Trick 3 : Place and tie a rubber eraser on his back n watch him carry it around with ease. I think they can carry abt 10 times their body weight.

Try all these stunts with a Rhinoserous bettel for best effect. They are strong and can survive through the ordeal.

Don't worry this ain't cruelty or anything, take good care of the beetle. You can create awareness about how kewl they are and how exciting these little creatures can be.
I have handled 100s of beetles and they are always very friendly with me.

Wow, that is tiny! Does anyone know how to go about pinning something like that? I am having some problems with very small beetles. I do have small pins, I guess maybe I just need more practice

You can try to pin them with small pins like 000 but it is better to glue them as said before but be carefull to use water based glue or you want be able to unglue them if you need to examine underside for indetification or for any other purpose. You can also use transparent plastic sheets to glue them so you can see it under. Or to glue it on the tip of the triangular paper so the is minimal covered area of body. I friend of mine is working on parasitic wasps and he make microscopical samples (damn i cannot remeber the right word for it). They are so small than even glueing would make them unuseable for indetification.

While we are talking about exotic pets I can suggest you all to try some of the larger Cerambycids as a pet. They are easy to maintain and if you have luck of living somewhere in the tropics you can find some of nice specimens, although here in Europe you can find also some speacies large enough to scare the crap out of your gests.

The image on my shirt is Venom from the Spider man Comic. It is a black spider Do you know people call Cicadas the name Locust around here?

The earwig was so cool! I was looking on that Goldenrod at some wasps and bees and I saw these pinchers sticking out. I thought "What the heck is that?!" So I put a jar around it and took the whole flower. I saw the Earwig but I still didn't know what it was! One of my Aunt's had to tell me. What a silly girl not knowing what an earwig was!

You know what... I found a Mantidfly and an Owlfly yesterday. How cool is that?!
