How do we as babies learn to breathe?

That's an interesting question.

The Medulla is responsible for most, if not all, autonomic nerve impulses, and therein actions. I'm really guessing that breathing is an autonomic action, since you cannot actually kill yourself by conciously stopping to breath. The lack of oxygen will make the medulla take over by making the concious part of the brain (the one "you" are) faint. Therein, after fainting, breathing resumes.

I think it works like that. It's an autonomic instinctive action, you don't learn it, you just know it.

on the contrary oscerot, there have been reports of people actually holding their breath until they died, although any respectable science book describes this as impossible.
Budhists monks have been recorded while actually stoping their heart and starting it again solely with the power of their brain.
and of course there is the example of zen meditation: te zen monks can raise their body temperature willingly and actually spend a night in the blazing winter with wet towels on their otherwise naked skin. not only are they perfectly fine in the morning, the towels are then dry and warm.

The misteries of the human body are far from figured out..

Well, I was referring to the average human being.

While it should be theoretically very possible to control every single aspect of your brain and therein body, we remain ignorant to it and therefore my explaination does make sense.

Let's admit, newborn babies aren't zen monks.
