Finger Smashing

Postby kjle » Sat Dec 16, 2006 3:51 am

So I have a problem, well more of a discomfort. Here's the story: I smashed the tip of my finger at work the other day. I had some immediate pain, but the nail didn't turn purple or anything. Anyways I went a few days with no pain, then yesterday, it started hurting again. And a little pain turned into a lot, and I couldn't use the finger. And today I noticed it with a yellow colour in one spot, and that spot hurt more than anywhere else. So when I got home, I decided to cut it open and have a look. lol, I have a habit of trying to fix things myself. And when I cut it open, puss came out. Like quite a bit, it was kinda weird. So I'm asking if anyone knows what exactly this is. Is it an infection or something? Which would explain puss right? But it wasn't open until now. Any ideas or guesses would be appreciated.

Kyle :)

The puss does sound like infection, but how could it get infected if there was no opening to a wound. Or was there?

It must be near the end of the nail. The underside of the fingers contain most number of natural flora and other microorganisms than the other parts of the body. The opportunistic nature of those microorganisms could have caused the infection.

was that a frustrated response as in "don't be lazy and ask questions on here, go to a doctor" or like "it could be serious, you might want to get that checked out"

Update: my finger hurts less now, but it still hurts a fair amount

Kyle,
Is your finger any better today?

If a blood vessel was damaged in the area wouldnt that cause an infection?

If the skin was not broken then the cause of the pus would most likely be anaerobic bacteria. there are a few different kinds that can colonize in damaged tissue.

What I always look for when there is an infection of skin/soft tissue,
is redness, pain and swelling, and
bad-smelling pus.

But if it leaked out (the pus) thats good.. Did you then soak it??

if it isnt better take the previous mentioned advice to see a doctor.

Yes, I would agree. If it doesn't get better, get medical attention. Otherwise it will only get worse without antibiotics.

it was a "it's impossible to dignose something over the internet. go to a doctor and he will tell you what to do. if you follow an advice we give on the forum and it turns out to make things worse, you won't be very glad will you? ;) "

Well I'm not overly concerned about it, I just wanted a few ideas to confirm my own. And I think that has been accomplished. So thank-you everyone.

Umm, it is red and slightly swollen, so there was probably a mild infection. If it gets worse I'll go to the doctor, but for now, I think it's an annoyance at worst.

Sounds like a good plan. I know that I would not see a doctor if it wasn't really bad. Who knows, it will probably get better on its own anyway!!
