Need Help about transpiration

Postby Vanny90 » Wed Dec 13, 2006 5:34 am

Will a daisy plant transpire more in a humid environment or in a dry environment? Why?

Thank you!

What's the purpose of transpiration?
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

Transpiration: The loss of water vapour from the aerial parts of the plant, especially through the stomata of the leaves.

From this definition, I guess the daisy plant will transpire more in a dry environment. The reason maybe due to the fact that the environment is dry, thus causing the plant's roots to take in more water for usage and this water passes from the roots to the leaves etc. and finally out into the atmosphere via the stomata.

Hope my answer is correct.

Partly correct; In dry environment plants tend to sieze thier activity for some time so that less heat is produce and stomata are closed to save water loss by transpiration.And waits for favorable condition to come in normal activity rate.

it really depends on the plant. some plants, like CAM plants, can withstand high heat and keep their stomata closed in a hot, dry environement. other plants can't stand the heat and open their stomata in order to cool off, but doing so they only lose the little water they have.

if we are discussing a dry but cool environment, then no doubt the plant will secrete abscisic acid and close it's stomata.
