How does the human body decompose in sea water?

Postby davec » Wed Nov 29, 2006 6:58 pm

What would happen to a human body thrown into the English Channel? How would it decompose? Would it be eaten?
I want to know as much as possible about what would happen physically i.e. to skin, internal organs, eyes, ears, limbs, bones etc

Any specific reason for asking?

I wouldn't throw the body in the English Channel. It's got rough seas and extremely strong winds. Although, I guess it's better than doing nothing at all.

The body would become stiff and bloated and will probably remain floating for a few days. It would be eaten by scavengers such as birds. Eventually, the remaing bits would sink into the ground.

Don't throw the body into the water though. No-one wants to see a dead body floating in the water. If the body was found somewhere, you should report it to the authorities.

And finally, as a word of caution...

"Please be careful while sailing through the English Channel."

thats what I want to know

Decomposition takes place best on the ocean floor, where most bacteria is concentrated.
