Transport in phloem of gymnosperms

Postby SU_reptile » Tue Nov 07, 2006 8:43 pm

Hi. Do you know how nutrients are transported in phloem of gymnosperms? I read in my physiology book that it's not clear.
I am really fascinated with those topics.

The only thing I can think of is that Sieve tubes in the phloem of angiosperms have companion cells, gymnosperms do not. so the process may just be slower :? otherwise its the same is it not?

BTW what plant Biology books does your school use?

We use polish books so you may be not aquainted with them. For physiology we use J. Kopcewicz's Fizjologia roslin (plant physiology) but on lectures we are explained thing following Taiz's Plant physiology.

Gymnosperms have Strassburger's (albumin) cells in secondary phloem, however they don't arise from the same mother cell, contrary to angiosperm companion cells.
