A quick chromosomes question???

Postby lil_wend » Mon Nov 06, 2006 8:31 pm

If there are 13 pairs of homologous chromosomes in a primary spermatocyte, how many chromosomes are there in a sperm?
I am a little confused by this question....Forgive my ignorance, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

that's impossible, since the primary spermatocyt is diploid. This would imply the sperm cells would have 6 1/2 chromosomes.

It was an actual question in my lab book, it was a review question. I was really confused. Thanks for the information. I will check with my teacher and see what she says.

The primary spermatocyte contains 13 pairs (=26 chromosomes) this will form secondary spermatocyte by meiosis.
Before meiosis its DNA content will be doubled and after meiosis it will prduce four haploid sperms which will contain 13 chromosomes (not pairs) each
