Homosporous and Heterosporous plants.....help! + generationsHi guys. If anyone knows the answers to these questions I would greatly appreciate if he/she posts. Thanks
Q1: Are all Bryophytes homosporous? Q2: Are ferns all homosporous? Q3: In Magnoliophyta (flowering plants), which structures are the microsporangium, megasporangium, the microgametophyte and the megagametophyte? Thanks alot guys. These plants in A level are not one of my favorite topics hehe
Ans. 1. Yes, all bryophytes are homosporous
Ans. 2. Selaginellopsida, Isoetopsida, Marsileidae and Salvinidae are heterosporous. Equisetales are homosporous however sexually are different. Ans. 3. Microsporangium = pollen sac, microgametophyte = pollen grain, mega(macro-)sporangium = nucellus, macrogametophyte = embryo sac
Thanks alot...That cleared up most of my difficulties. One more question: So some Polypodiophytes are homosporous, while some others are heterosporous, right?
Yes, Marsileidae and Salvinidae are water ferns that has spores differentiated into micro- and macrospore. They have also very interesting sporangia-bearing creations (sporocarpia). Try to find some more sophisticated info about them, because they are really worth it.
Thank you very much. The lecturer today actually mentioned today that when the pollen grain has only 1 nucleus, it is a microspore, but when this nucleus seperates into the tube nucleus and male generative nucleus, it is the microgametophyte. Neat stuff. Hehe Thanks
