Animal speed:I was wondering: what makes certain animals, such as the cheetah or sailfish, so fast? Is it simply their muscle / bone makeup, or is there another contributing factor?

The reason that such dynamic structures evolve in some animals, and become a predominant structure is because of selection and competition for resources. You can look at the big cats (which are relatively endangered because of their diet) and the fact that they only eat meat - which they do, they are exclusive carnivores and we can see from comparing the dentures of mammals, and they are pretty much the only exclusively land mammals that are relatively homodonts.
There is great competition for food resources, the lions great size and dominance might have allowed it to have the strength to overpower. The cheetah isnt so strong, but it needs to be able to eat somehow right? this can help us figure out how and why certain characteristics may have prevailed and remained and obvious today. Its speed allows it to catch its prey. I mean as posted it is due to its metabolic pathways and how it utilizes energy along with other factors, but i rekon they are probaby why the speed came as a result. Perhaps a more efficient metabolism ALLOWED them to be fast then other characteristics that highlighted their evolving speed to further optimize it? Same with fish i mean their species are SOOO variable and soo abundant that well competition for food woult be so much more hell if they didnt all evolve to different niches. Different niches, different needs , different structures. Or else you die! simple as that. =)
