GWTL wrote:I live in South Africa. I've probably seen about 3 green mosquitoes around my house in about 5 years (all males). I found This one sitting on the wall in front of me while I was studying.

As far as I know all the male mosquitoes in our area are all green (or so I hear). I haven't seen any other references to green males though. As I understand it they're rarely seen because

1. they're males and don't drink blood (and thus don't usually enter houses).
2. Male's lives are much shorter than female's lives.
3. They're green and camouflage very well.

This theory about green males obviously isn't true about all mosquito species.

The females are black.

Here are some pictures:

I stumbled upon this forum when I was trying to find information on the green mosquito I found this morning. It looked like the one in these pictures by GWTL, but with slight differences. The body is not banded like the one in the picture, but wholly green (leaf green colour), with banded legs (black/whitish). it has reddish wings or maybe that's just a trick of light i'm not sure.

It looks like normal, slim house mosquito (though green instead of brown), but smaller in overall size.

It was already dead when I found it though, so I thought either it is actually born with birth defects or it has learnt to draw "plant blood" instead of "human blood".

Or maybe it drew Hulk's blood and turned green?

It's the first one I've seen :)

Normaly male Anopheles mosquito are sap suckers so these may look green.
But A mutant or natural green mosquito is green right from head to codal end.

Hi,

I am from Pakistan and today I've found green mosquito or a green fly in my garden. It's legs and abdomen were just like a mosquito but eyes and wings were just like a house fly. Last but not the least, no proboscis were found for bitting purpose. Can anyone tell me what exactly it is.

Hello I'm also here because I've encountered my first green mosquito. Massachusetts USA. One landed on the hood of my car. As i went to hit it with my finger tip it moved to the side quickly to avoid me, I imagined it being as agile as a cockaroach doing the side step. Next I gave it a little tap without destroying it. It definetly appeared to be a green mosquito. It's been an abnormally wet summer this year. Tom
