My water research .. how do you find .!??

Postby SWORD MASTER » Tue Oct 24, 2006 10:34 pm

Good morning for those who live in Europe, Asia and Africa, good Afternoon for those who live in South & North America,,,, and a HI! for those who live somewhere else ... :D

I wanted to take ur opinion about my new research before I handle it to my biology teacher next week .... here we go ... :P

Adhesion & Cohesion…

The water can attract water, in other words, the water molecule (H2O) can attract another water molecule, because in the end of the molecule, the oxygen atom has a negative charge, while on the other end, the hydrogen atom has a positive charge and this attractive force is what gives water its cohesive and adhesive properties.

Surface Tension

As I’ve said before, each water molecule attract another water molecule this causes the water to pull itself into a shape with the smallest amount of surface area, a bead (sphere). All the water molecules on the surface of the bead are 'holding' each other together or creating surface tension.

Capillary Action

Surface tension is related to the cohesive properties of water. Capillary action however, is related to the adhesive properties of water. You can see capillary action 'in action' by placing a straw into a glass of water. The water 'climbs' up the straw. What is happening is that the water molecules are attracted to the straw molecules. When one water molecule moves closer to the straw molecules the other water molecules (which are cohesively attracted to that water molecule) also move up into the straw. Capillary action is limited by gravity and the size of the straw. The thinner the straw or tube the higher up capillary action will pull the water.

I know it's a bid small .. but it's just the start,, what do u think of it??

dont forget the polarity of water as this one is very impt., specific heat, etc

and also since its for a biology class dont forget to relate water properties (polarity, adhesion, cohesion, etc) to biological systems or living organisms..
