Chirt

Postby mxrjacqueline on Fri May 06, 2005 3:07 am

Does anyone know what a "chirt" is? Where do we find it? And what do scientists think it is made up of?

At first I had no idea what a Chirt was. But i had a few minutes to spare so did a bit of searching.
It doesnt appear often (Theres no references at pubmed) but on google, it seems to be to do with clay and flint. This is the strongest reference i found: Limestones often contain lumps of fine-grained, water-deposited silica called chirt. Dark gray or black chirt is called flint.
From: http://www.guttenberg.k12.ia.us/dikkers ... 5Noteshtml
So its water-deposited silica.
Is the chirt you are thinking of anything to do with limestone or rocks?

Why is it important/Why do you want to know about it? :?

Do you mean a chirp? Like when a bird sings?

You are right. Seems he was talking about a rock. I am moving this topic to the Off-topic section

This one had me puzzled! Number one, the spelling is Chert! Chert is a type of silica: a brittle microcrystalline quartz. Source: sedimentary rocks. I have a dirt road and put chert on it every 5 years! I have to get it from a construction company because I need so much! I hope this helps!
