at room temperature, on a surface

I think it depends on the type of that cell. Nevertheless cells need to have their environment in order to exchange substrates, oxygen and so on, so they will fail to stay alive for longer period of time.
Planst cells and animal cells may be kept in special solutions that provide substrates for maintaining their life activities and fullfill their metabolic demands.
