Parallel evolution/divergent evolution

How to differentiate b/t divergence and parallel evolution in this case...If one organism undergoes divergent evolution, how do you know if divergent evolution has undergone or parallel evolution? Because divergent evolution can undergone, but due to insufficient time, the features have not changed and can be mistaken with organism evolving in parallel.
