Hi, I am new to this forum. Right now, I am studying celluar biology. After reading a section on celluar respiration, I just have a couple of hypothetical questions that I was wondering if anyone here may answer. Thanks!!

Question:
I understand that the chemiosmosis is powered by the difference in the concentration of hydrogen ions that creates the proton electromotive force. Let's say that a strain of cells undergoes a mutation that increases the permeability of the inner mitochondrial menmbrane to hydrogen ions. How do you think this mutation would affect the process of cellular respiration? Moreover, let's say that the mutant cells could survive, what metabolic requirements do you think would need to be adapted?

Your help with this would be greatly appreciated. Once again, thank you very much.

i think in a short while the cellular respiration will be at its maximum but because the pH decreases between the two cell membranes of the mitochondrium, the mitochondrium will be destroyed. This will cause apoptosis ( = programmed cell death)
