DNA = ChromosomeModerator: BioTeam Keep in mind that although the 2 strands = 2 molecules thing is technically right, most people (including instructors) consider those two strands together to be one molecule of DNA. I certainly would, although I wouldn't say it's wrong to call them 2.
And if the initial question reflects the instructor's question, they're in that "most people" group.
My post was to see if biologist/geneticist are still working with 23 pairs of chromosomes as expressed by FUTULAM. The replies point out that you are using CHROMATIN to define a DNA. Is that correct? If so how many chromatin in a single cell.
Re: DNA = ChromosomeThanks, I did that and am back to square one. The number 46 is composed of 22 pairs and 2 sex chromosomes. This makes the total of individual unique components (IS THERE A NAME FOR THESE??) in the diploid human cell equal to 24. If this is not true then I need to know why not! Twenty four is the number of electrical circuits operating in the human body. It allows every cell to connect with the brain via the 24 foramen in the skull and the 24 vertebrae in the spine. The human eye shows these circuits. More importantly, 24 is the the number of moods in the day and the number of Chi Chi's in a year (periods of 15 days of which there are 2 per starsign). This relates the composition of the human cell to the earth's motions! An engine for evolution and much much more. I am about to publish these findings and if you can blow holes in this reasoning please do so because I know this will be controversial without the acceptance of the biologist and geneticist. I studied geology, bioelectronics and celestial mechanics and do not consider myself an expert in the above fields. Have you seen the FISH Jpeg on this website? It begs for some research on which pair of chromosomes connects with which organ. I am pretty sure the 2 sex chromosomes take care of the Testes/Ovaries and the Penis/Vagina circuits. Also no 1, the biggest is probably the Liver (The biggest organ in the body).
Jack there are 2 X's in the female cell so that the total number is also 24 in women. I suspect that right from the start the human genome scientists thought like you. Maybe they even started on a female human and saw the 2 X's as one chromosomal pair. You also just lumped them together as one and from their function in the body this is not possible. Each of the 22 pairs composes an electrical circuit with a male(Dad) and a female strand (Mum) This is reflected in our 2 eyes. The 2 X's look after the genitals and the reproductive organs. Nothing to do with pappa or mamma! Just readying the female to become a mother. Boys will be boys because they have the Y to produce a plethora of seed. Is not Nature absolutely magical?
Please let me know if there is any evidence supporting that the 2 female X chromosomes are 1 pair in women. 23 chromosomes for a female and 24 for a male does not compute. The concept is holding back biological sience.
see there are 23 pairs of chromosomes in males and females
in females you have 23 different types of chromosomes and in males you have 24 different types. but the X and Y are paired like X and X in females although are a little different in shape it isn't what you do that matters but it is how you do it
It is because of the confusion shown by jwalin that we are having this discussion. I notice from Wiki that the first result for the number we are discussing comes from a woman's cell. The statement 2n=46 is incorrect. It should be 2n+X+Y=46 for men and 2n+X+X=46 for women. That makes n=22 the number of autosomes. Is there evidence that the 2 X's in a woman form a pair? One is from the mother and the other from the grandmother on the father's side. Two unrelated sources!

there is plenty of evidence and the other X can come from the father who has XY it isn't what you do that matters but it is how you do it
