question about apple decay

Postby eydryan » Mon Aug 14, 2006 9:50 pm

i was wondering how i could (what substances or which way) make an apple decay faster (preferably in a liquid of some sort - which one can find in his home)... or if not decay faster at least the proper conditions for it to decay...

probably not ethilic alcohol right? :)

try ethanol. Ethanol is released as fruit ripens and rots, the more fruit the higher the concentration of ethanol in the area---hence, the phrase one bad apple spoils the barrel... Anyhow, put a couple apples and a few bananas in a plastic bag and seal it. Then let it sit for a few days and observe.

Not ethanol, ethylene!

But you can place fruits that exhaust a lot of it in a closed box or plastic bag with your apple (apples themselves are good, banana too).

you do not need to buy it. The bananas and the apples will produce it for you. ethylene(CH2=CH2) is a gas.

unfortunatelly i wasn't yet able to make the experiment yet because i went to the countryside at my grandfather's 82nd bday and was kinda busy.

i knew ch2-ch2 was ethane or something like that (etan in my language) and was a hydrocarb.

anyweays thanks again for dee replies and i'll submit some photos of the thing once done

no CH3-CH3 is ethane. u have to fill up the carbon atom with 4 bonds.

did u mature an apple and lay it to rot?
