Why was Dolly the clone put down

Postby Michelledsr » Sat Aug 05, 2006 1:44 am

I have read several papers by and about Ian wilmut But Im trying to work through them I am trying to understand why was Dolly euthanized

Was it just the Virus caused Lung tumor or the advanced arthitsis or a combination of both?

Insight into this would be helpful Thanks

I thought she died of a lung disease caused by a simple retrovirus that killed many animals in the farm, especially since they were raised indoors.

I don't know if it is true, as the real report is never shown clearly in the public...
Dolly seems to be suffering from disease whe she's alive...
I'm weird and crazy!

From Science:
Dolly Goes to Greener Pastures
Dolly the sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell, died last eek. Her caretakers at the Roslin Institute in Scotland euthanized the 6-year-old sheep on 14 February after diagnosing an incurable lung disease, pulmonary adenomatosis or Jaagsiekte. Her death seems unconnected to her unconventional origin, as the virus that causes the disease has infected both cloned and normal sheep at the institute.
Ian Wilmut,who with Keith
Campbell led the team that created Dolly, says that a preliminary postmortem investigation turned up only two abnormalities: lung tumors characteristic of the disease and signs of the arthritis she had developed several years ago.Although a detailed evaluation of all her tissues is under way,Wilmut says scientists may never know whether the arthritis was
affected by her being a clone. [...]

She was put down because of a disease that was plaguing the whole institue, but was already suffering arthritis. But I do not really see anything that was hidden Mafer.
