i believe it is because of the sulfur content of the onion

I'm not quite sure, but I think it's due to chemical reactions that occur once the onion is cut open. The chemical reactions produce sulfur compunds which react with the lining of your eye, to produce a mild concetration of sulfuric acid. Then again, I might be wrong.

yes you are right a low concentration of sulphuric acid is produced on the eye, this is irritant.
