HELP on Dihybrid punnett square!!!

Postby cinnimn_08 » Wed Apr 13, 2005 8:00 pm

I need help to figure out why men get the Hemophilia disease more than women!!!
heres the question.....
1. A male (XY) with a healthy dominant clotting gene marries a woman (XX) that is heterozygous for clotting genes. Using the key, complete the punnett square to determine the outcome of their children.
H-healthy clotting gene, dominant
h-unhealthy non-clotting mutant gene, recessive
O- nothing because hemophilia is only on the female (X) chromosome

I need to figure out the parent. Then i need to fill in the DIHYBRID chart

The dad would be XHY0(subscript zero is what I was taught) and the mom would be XHXh.

men have one X and one Y chromosome. That means they are different and cannot hold each others place.
Women have 2 X chromosomes. that means there are 2 facts called 'recessive' and 'dominant'.
Hemophilia is recessive. so if one of the X chromosomes carries hemophilia, that is not seen in the fenotype of the woman.
But if a man has a X chromosome that carries hemophilia, it can seen in the phenotype.

Those couple may have children like that: (couldnt figure out your key, this one may be useful.)
X(h): hemophilia
X: normal X
one carrier female ---> X(h)X
one normal female---> X X
one hemophiliac male--> X(h)Y
one normal male-------->X Y

When you did the XHYO and XHXh, wouldn't the starting parents be XYHO and XXHh? and then i have to foil it right?

Well if you foil it wouldn't you get something like YH? that would be impossible.
