For discussing the functions of different structures of all organisms.
Why do aromatic compounds 'aroma'tic? I mean why did humans develop smelling sense [ sense about chemical composition] for these chemicals only? What about other organisms? Do the same class of compounds/species are the 'aroma'tes for them too? If yes then the reason is something applicable to all of the organisms that sense the cyclic compounds as the 'aroma'tes...
In general many other chemicals are sensed by our noses which ain't cyclic...i just wanted to know how was it decided which ones to be choosen as the chemicals of sense ?
IS it due to vaporization /boiling temp.s & thus availibility near a particular source..? A mate..?
I'm guessing it's neither, someone just named them that way since they are(or at least i think so) the only hidrocarbon compounds that smell...

the smelling sense is the OLDESt sense most porbably. the neurone that connects the nose to the brain goes to the thalamus bypassing the brain stem, but also it is connected to a cortex directly, it is connected to the limbic cortex, which is the emotional part of the brain.
the olfactory sense has many important functions in most animals. very useful in sexual reproduction---> some animals will not ejaculate, if they do not smell the females hormones indicating she is on heat. What is interesting that although thats not the case in humans, there are recenct studies with the HLA hormone - i think thats what its called. where a woman basically is attracted to males who is most genetically different to here in a specific gene that is correlated with he immune response. We can imagine that as humans we dont really have many threats to our life --- if hungry we almost always find food , we kill almost any predator with weapons -- so im guessing throughout history disease is one thing that humans were most susceptible to as a population controlling, fatal sort of issue. In this case the olfactory sense is ver yimportant, because it is so necessary for a mothe to find a mate most appropriate--- for the goodness for her offspring.
Its interesing to note that certain smells will set off the ooooldest memories more than any other sense.for example, for a person who may have a disability due to a car accident --- will most probably be reminded or at least feel differemt whenever smelling the smell of burnt tyres.
Its all due tothis direct connectin to the brain, which could be there due to its earlier evolution in a common ancestor before the evolution of the other senses , or earlier forms of human required it for survival as well. and that is also true. Sexual repoduction , gathering food, danger (ie smoke smell) are all required for survuval.
Ok now i get your question. First of all, you can't smell cholesterol
Second, i have no idea. I'm kicking by brains trying to figure out an advantage, and can't find anything...
It's not aromatic, but it has some cyclical bonds that resemble aromatic structures. Look at the previous post by 2810712

the pheromones...are ...fatty acids?
& if pheromones are not 'smell'ed then what does give those smells to the special things?

But thanks alot.Through out our journey through the trens de bios, we should keep in mind this point, probably we discover the advantages & disadvantages of the aromism of the aromatics.
