Chemical elements of Proteins

Name the chemical element that makes protein unique amongst organic chemicals occuring in living things.

Any help would be great!

A protein is a chain of amino acids. Now each amino acid is made up of 3 groups. These 3 groups are the carboxyl, alcohol, and amines groups. These groups are all make up of Carbon, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen. I would have to say it is the nitrogen because it is the only in proteins.

Well, nitrogen is an essential part of nucleic acids as well. The 'A 'group that is present that makes one amino acid different from other, is responcible for its properties. These also affect the various conformations a plain polypeptide takes to become a functional protien.

Yup, I also can make a phenylhydrazone which including N atom there...I can say that the unique side of protein is, they're formed by peptide chain from each constituting amino acids and after that, they-protein- also can form secondary, tertiary and quartenary structure...:lol:

and also we may found C, H, O, N, S, P in protein.
and if you are talking about enzyme you may found, also, inorganic element there.

Proteins can also contain prostetic groups which couls theoretically be anything, think about heme, which bounds an iron ion in hemoglobin.

And yeah nitrogen is not at all unique to amminoacids, it can also be found in sugars(GlcNac) in lipids (Phosphotidilcolina) and nucleic acids are anready mentioned.

AAs are not unique in terms of what they are made of.
