Bizarre Insect

Postby vollsa » Wed May 03, 2006 8:28 am

I am from a city in Australia and last year, as I was eating breakfast, I had my hand resting on the couch I was sitting on when I felt a sudden, sharp pain in it. I raised my hand and attached to it was an insect which looked vaguely similar to a moth but didn't ever show flap its wings. It was about 2-3 centimetres in length and I had no idea what it was. I shook my hand to rapidly remove it and, while it clung for a few seconds, it was dislodged. All the while, I never saw any wings flap as I shook it so I don't think it was a moth (at least in my limited experience). I was unable to find it again and have had no luck in finding any similar accounts on the Internet. I've never heard of anybody being bitten by a moth (the idea almost sounds silly). Does anybody have any idea as to what this insect was?

Hmmm. Quite vague description. It couldnt be moth, unles you in Australia have some strange moths but it was maybe some kind of cicada (Hemiptera). They can be very large and have wings that could be mistaken for moth. They form triangular shape. And cicadas also have mouth parts specialised for pircing and sucking so they can bite good. But i can say anything for sure.

My guess is Hemiptera.
Can you describe its wings?

When I was younger I was bitten by a moth thing, it flew away and then it died, and my ear swelled to about three times its own size  it wasnt cool...

Some members of the order Trickoptera (not sure I spelled that correct)
can be moth-like in appearance. :?:
