Hi
I have had this same problem now for about 8 or 9 years! I have had every possible test done, changed my diet and still none of the doctors in California nor here in Arizona has figured it out either. I swell up at the drop of a hat and look very pregant in a matter of minutes. It doesn't seem to matter what I eat or don't eat, no one has figured it out. I have alot of pain and discomfort with it, at times it even feels like my ribs may crack or break because of the swelling. I do have IBS, but this will last up to two weeks or more at a time which isn't caused by the IBS. I am so tired and tired of the pain and uncomfortable feeling that comes with this every time it flares up. Its hard to figure out how so many of us have the same thing and yet no one can seem to help us. But I keep hoping that someday they will. Hang in there, someday I hope someone in the medical field will come along that can really help all of us.

After my previous post, I did try the diet the doctor asked me to try. No salads, no fruit, no nuts, no fiber cereal, no raw veggies. I crave fruit and a salad. I have to admit that things are a "little" better, but far from good. Last night my husband and I had dinner at a friends home and she had pasta. I felt horrible afterwards and I ate none of the things I wasn't supposed to. I've tried to do my own research on this matter, but there doesn't seem to be information available on this subject. And what exactly would you call it? That's the problem. There's no name for it and no research and no solutions. I too, am very tired and so tired of feeling sick after I eat. I've actually had to buy larger pants so that when we eat out, I don't feel pain from my clothes being too snug. My belly simply blows up and I can't stand the pressure of the waistband. Eating cottage cheese or yogurt for a few days, lessens my bloating (to a point), but who can survive on that? UGHHHH!! This is awful. I need energy.

A friend of my sister has had the same problem that all of us seem to be having with the swelling and pain and the doctors couldn't find what was wrong with her either. She finally went to a Mayo clinic in Scottsdale, Az. There they finally found that she had a bad gallbladder and gallstones! Which has been removed and she is about 95 percent better now! Has anyone else been tested for that??

bloated

Postby claremarie » Sun Oct 01, 2006 9:49 am

I too have this problem. The word 'bloated' does not do this feeling justice. I get frustrated because people don't think it's a serious problem. But when it feels like you swallowed a football with lunch, along with legarthy, irritability, back and joint pain, headaches, wind... you feel like hiding away in bed all day- you don't want to go to work, let alone socialise, your clothes don't fit, you're in extreme discomfort, but as it's not 'pain', it's not seen as important. Ahh! Whatever exclusion diets I try does not help- eating less carbs can reduce bloating but gives me IBS symptoms- diarreah, urgency. Either way I need to urinate far too often throughout day and night. Problems are a lot worse pre-menstrually, but my periods are extremely irregular, and the 'PMS' can seem to last for weeks, months at a time! This problem is isolating, confusing, despairingly frustrating and is ruining my life!!!

An answer finally!

Postby kmas » Sun Oct 01, 2006 11:01 pm

Hi Everyone,
I am the one who originally posted this topic. It has been 6 years of testing and frustration and thye finally found something. I did a Gastric Emptying scan and they found that I have a delay in emptying my stomache. Has anybody else been tested for this? I am not sure why or what they can do but I will keep everyone posted.

Hi Everyone, I've read everyone's comments and replies- and I'm now questioning things that are going on with me. I'll start with saying that in the last year I've gained 30lbs. In May of 05 my doctor put me on Effexor Rx for depression, I took that medicine for about 9 months- and during that time, I did notice weight gain and constipation, which are all side effects of taking this medicine. So in January, I was taken off the medicine, and I felt better. I started dieting, trying to let my hair grow all b.c I was getting married IN MAY! So, with in a few months of not being on the effexor anymore, I still have the constipation problems, my hair wasn't growing and I felt horrible. So I went back to my General Pract. and He said I have IBS and he also wanted to check my thyroid. Because depression and all my systems go with hypothyroidism. My test came back with hypothyroid systems and my GP decided to send me to an endocrinologist. I'm on Synthroid (which is a synthetic replacement) Now, my TSH levels are great. .097 and my constipation is still here- (which always goes along with Hypothyroidism) The bloating is killing me. My face and eyes swell a little to! My endocrinologist has decided to send me to a Gastronoligist for testing, since my Thyroid level is exactly where I want it to be. So, I'm just nervous, and fed up with not knowing what's wrong with me. What's the hardest for me is people don't see anything physically wrong with me, they only see the weight gain- so I'm constantly educating my friends and family about hypo thyroidism and the problems that go along with it, so they'll understand.

bloating

Postby dmincher » Tue Oct 10, 2006 9:56 pm

hi everyone
I have just read all your comments , it really helps to know others have the same problem as me. My bloating has got worse over the past year, as soon as I eat most things my stomach doubles in size and the wind is so bad its affecting my work, I work in an office and sometimes I dare not stand up to open a filing cabinet so I try to stay seated. I have only recentley visited my Dr, who has given me some tablets to relax my bowels, which have not helped so far, she said I probably have a food intolerance but i get bloated whatever food I eat , so I was wondering if any one had any advice for me
thanks d

I went to my gastro and he suggested that I take Zelnorm for a month along with some previcid! I'm pretty upset that he's prolonged my problem- I've tried Zelnorm before for 2 wks with zero results. If anyone has any suggestions on what to do about bloating and constipation, I would like to know! Thanks

I am relieved to hear that others are experiencing the same symptoms as I have been for the past year, but sorry that no doctors seem to be able to fix the problem. After a year of believing I was simply getting fat, not exercising enough, or eating the wrong foods - and changing all of those things with no results - I have made a dr appt with a gastroenterologist. If I find out anything encouraging I will certainly post it here, and would love to encourage others to do the same. Similar to everyone's else experience, after I eat ANYTHING, my stomach swells to where I look 5 months pregnant. I run 3 miles a day and am an otherwise thin, fairly young (31) person, and unless I completely stop eating these symptoms occur. I am miserable. I hope that we can all find out what's causing this, because it definitely is not normal!

I've recently started eating ALL BRAN Cereal and it's helps 95% with the constipation and the bloating! Just an fyi to those that want something to help a little. I honestly don't have the bloating as much, b/c I'm going to the b room and the constipation is relieved bye the cereal. Good luck.

Bloating

Postby saara » Mon Oct 30, 2006 1:13 pm

I have read all your stories and just wanted to Thank you all for telling them. I thought I was going insane with all this. I have been dealing with Bloating, stomach discomfort, weight gain, constipation, looking like i am 5-6 months pregnant, discomfort in sex and so on.
This problem has been driving me nuts. I have taken laxatives to try and get rid of everything that seems to be backed up and that has not worked for me. It seems everything i eat makes me look like i am pregnant. I am frustrated and don't know what to do - it's has taken over me and made me feel so depressed. I wish there were an answer out there. I went to see my GYN about this, in which i thought it was something wrong woth my uterus, just cause the size of my belly and the discomfort in sex. He said it was just gas and i shoul d try some laxatives.
And that did not work for me. So please if any one of you receive a decent answer to all this - please post it. Thank you and good luck!

Me Too

Postby scubagirl » Thu Nov 02, 2006 6:12 pm

I gained 40lbs in less than 6 months, am constipated, and look like I am 6 months pregnant. I thought I was losing my mind and no one believe me until I compared my stomach with a pregnant woman! I do have IBS but I had the diarrhea kind and it is under control. Are any of you taking prescription pain pills? I had 2 failed spine surgeries and take pain pills which do slow the system down.

Last night I was only able to eat 1/2 of a fish kabob with rice then felt like my meal was seating on top of giant baseketball. I couldn't finish my meal. I started wonderering if I had developed a gluten intolerance (no rice, cereals, bread and a lot of stuff I eat). I also wondered if I had stomach cancer and started scaring myself but if all you people are suffering the same thing, it is likely a food interolance or related to IBS I think.

I am seeing my doctor in about an hour for a follow-up appointment. She tested me for thyroid, diabetes, parasites (because I travel alot) and I asked her to look for Cushings Disease which causes your stomach to protrude.

Worse, I am supposed to go somewhere an appear in a bathingsuit in about a week where they may be media cameras for an event I am attending. Luckily, the cameras won't be looking at me but I still may not go. Who is that 6 months pregant woman and why is she scuba diving?

I am glad I not alone...
