you could open a wound somewhere else and hope that it drops the blood pressure enough so your head doesn't get any blood
I usually just plug my nose with tissue paper. If it happens again, goto a doctor and have it cauterized.

Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Hope you are not serious, Dave.
It matters not how strait the gate
How charged with punishment the scroll

You could try having a friend punch you in the nose. Sudden shock will constrict the rete capillaries causing decreased blood flow and increasing the rate of coagulation.
PS: on a more serious note, the plant yarrow is excellent for stopping nose bleeds, look it up and see if you have any growing around your area.
Oh yeah, I forgot to give a serious answer to the question. I pinch the bleeding nostril shut and tilt my head back.
You don't really want to pinch the nostrils. What you want to do is put your thumb and forefingers where the nose cartilidge meets the bone, slightly above the nostrils and squeeze gently. You should feel a pulse there and by squeezing gently, you'll cut off the circulation to the lateral nasal arteries and the transverse facial arteries, giving the wound time to coagulate.
Leaning your head back may or may not help. If the nose bleeds are caused by dry nasal passages, there are sprays that can help (saline, I believe). If it's from picking your nose with your hook prosthetic, I'd suggest using your other hand.
i have VERY bad nose bleeds & the only way i can stop them is to let it go for a minute...like over a sink or outside. then push on th end of the actual bone. ( not the nose)!! DO NOT tilt your head back!!!! the blood will drain into your lungs & it could cause problems. hope i helped!!
hugs, loves, and so much more!!
Generally, leaning your head back won't result in the blood going to your lungs. Unless you have pre-existing aspiration problems with other liquids, the blood will drain into your throat and stomach. Not a very nice thought, really, but unless it's a really gushing bloody nose (in which case you should probably go to the hospital), tilting your head back won't do any real damage and will actually help to reduce the flow.
Just freexe them..I usually use ice blocks to stop nose bleeding. But if you want a good effect, just freeze them with liquid nitrogen...
Q: Why are chemists great for solving problems?
A: They have all the solutions.
Don't tilt your head back! You'll be spitting blood for another hour... and tasting it for another two hours!!!!
I used to have really bad nosebleeds, and I would pinch my nose (where the bone and cartilige meets) and hold my head forward to preven it from going into my throat (because it horrifies me to spit and taste blood)
And, if you're having them continuously go to a doctor and have it cauterized. It doesn't hurt ... and you won't bleed from that spot again... for a while at least.
Maybe it's just a guy thing. The tasting blood and spitting it up didn't really bother me that much when I had nose bleeds. It's probably simply a societal thing that guys tend to be less squeamish about blood because that's what society expects.
I didn't really think about the "gross" factor because, as a guy, blood simply never bothered me.
I don't intend the comment to be sexist, so please don't take it that way. It's simply a comment on the effect of society on the sexes.
hey blood doesnt bother me and im a girlie nor does guts, liver, brain or any other tissue you might have to stain while doing biosciences.
mind u im a girlie whos into football and cricket which most people think requires a Y chromosome to understand the rules so maybe im an exception to that squeamish thing too
