Hey,

I am having trouble trying to figure out whether a trait is autosomal or sex-linked. I have to figure it out from pedigrees of a family. I have been able to figure out whether it is dominant or recessive, but how do you know whether it would be autosomal or sex linked?

dominant: affected persons usually are born out of at least 1affected parent (not when non-penetrance occurs)

recessive: affected persons are usually born out of normal parents

X-linked: only inherited through the X-chromosome and usually only males are affected (females can show some characteristics due to inactivation of the healthy X-chromosome). Women mostly healthy carriers.

autosomal: can be inherited from both the fathers and the mother
