To any doctors-BOWEL CANCER

Postby chenglorraine » Mon Apr 10, 2006 2:48 pm

Are there any effective ways of preventing BOWEL CANCER?
My Gran had Bowel cancer and was believed to be caused by environmental factors (since she seldoms ate vegetables and drank water). I am terrified that my family members may get it as well. Can it be prevented if they drink plenty of water and eat many vegetables?

Some forms of colon cancer are genetics, other seems more environmental. There is not ONE bowel cancer.
But fiber rich Foods (like vegies, cereals, fruits), non smoking, non alcoholic life style decraese the robability of colon cancer. hnce a healthy diet and lifestyle maydecrease the the risk of cancer. Another strategy is to have coeloscopy (or other diagnosis methods, but usually this is practiced after you are 50) at regular interval, because many forms of cancer can be cured if treated early enough.

I am not a Medical doctor so those are very general advice and if you are scared, go and see your doctor, he will know you and be able to give the best advice (even better than any doc on the net).

Well I am also not a doctor but as I was searching about some anticancer plant products, I found that some strong antioxidant phytochemicals help to fight cancer. For example if you include turmeric in your regular diet, its active component curcumin with its strong anti oxidant properties helps to fight free radicals that might turn a cell cancerous.
May you got some idea that may help a bit. :)

As the other colleagues said, also I say that I AM NOT A MEDICINE DOCTOR, so I can't tell you sure things... But I'm going to write you some information that I found in a website. I hope it will be useful for you.

Colon and rectum cancers start with a little polyp which if it is not extracted, it can be converted in a serious tumor.

Colorectal cancer is preventable when polyps are found and removed. It is highly curable when found in its early stages. It is important to have screening tests that examine the entire colon because cancer can occur anywhere in the colon.

Food and substances which prevents this kind of cancer: Lutein, Berries, Methylpyridinium, Calcium, Carotenoids, Soy, Chocolate, Coffee, Folate, Vitamin D and Wine.

Some symptoms of colon and rectum cancer are the expelation of blood with faeces, stomach-aches with frequency, high fever, expelation of very thin faeces, sudden loss of weight, etc.

Both men and women are at risk. Colon cancer occurs most often in people 50 years of age and older, and the risk increases as you get older. If you are 50 years old or older, it's time to get screened. Screening is the best way to find polyps before they turn into cancer or to find cancer and treat it. A family history of colon cancer may increase your risk for this disease. People at high risk for colon cancer may need to get tested more often and at an earlier age. It's best to speak with a health professional to discuss your options.

There are many different tests that check for colon cancer, but a colonoscopy is the most reliable. It's the only colon cancer exam where a doctor can actually remove growths before they turn into cancer. This exam is safe and doesn't hurt, although patients may be given pain medicine and muscle relaxants ahead of time. During the exam, a doctor looks at the inside walls of the colon through a bendable, lighted tube with a camera at one end. If any growths are found, they can usually be removed without pain right away. The exam lasts about 30 minutes and should be done every five to ten years.

Thank you very much for all your help......but, does that mean bowel cancer doesn't exist? (or isn't that just the same as colon cancer?) one of my family members has already seeked help from the doctor and he said she was fine.....thanks again.

Well, one of the plants that I am working with has got the active compound(andrographolide) that has been found to give good results in some types of cancers like skin cancer and colon cancer, stomach cancer etc.
But, I am not personaly working on the pharmacological aspects of this plant, I am working on its DNA.
