Hello tasha, I'm glad young people are interested in careers in biotechnology. Just like what LilKim said, biotechnology is a broad subject. You can go to the academe and teach, go to direct research in a government agency, pharmaceutical, agricultural, environmental, food & beverage company... etc...
Biotechnology is very very broad. Focus on more specific subject. Interested on the use of biotechnology in farming/agriculture? Or do you plan on discovering/manufacturing novel proteins or enzymes for use in the industries? Do you plan to help in the biodegradation of oil spills and other toxic environmental subsctances? Do you want to predict the behavior of microorganisms using equations and simulations? Do you want to develop new ways in detecting and treating cancers and other diseases?
The list goes on... I suggest that you read a bit more on biotechnology and applied microbiology, then probably you can decide on which branch you want to specialize. Remember that interest plays a very important role in your future decisions.
Wishing you the best of luck.
heyy i'm also interested in biotechnology. i'm 16 this year.. gonna be anyway. i'm kinda interested in workin in a lab.. not botany nor agricultural. kinda more focus on cells. microbiology, cell biology.. something like that.. can someone tell me what are the academic requirements and what careers if i choose this route? thankx. lurv' kayliq. =)
There is a whole range of biotechnology-related jobs. You can be a genetic engineer. You can also work as an agricultural biotechnologist. If you decide to further your studies, you can teach biotechnology at the university or any other institution of higher learning.
