Liquid nitrogen

Postby HELISA » Sat Apr 01, 2006 1:22 am

Hi, during the DNA extraction from plant tissue many people use liquid nitrogen to grind the tissue to a fine powder. Do you know the other advantages of the use of liquid nitrogen during homogenization of i.e. grass shoot tissues? Is the liquid nitrogen protect the plant DNA from Dnase?

Yes, liquid notrogen prevents DNA from nucleases, as well as it prevents growth of unwanted microbes. Homogenizing tough plant tissues becomes very easy, using liquid nitrogen, also you can store your material for long time. But, it has its disadvantages also.
