de novo and salvage pathways of nucleotides

In nucleotide biosynthesis are pyrimidines synthesized only by de novo pathways and purines synthesized only by salvage pathways or can they both be synthesized by either pathway?

I think the first part is the right answer but I keep confusing myself so I am not sure.
