Osmosis/Diffusion Questions

Postby Diana Timpano on Fri Mar 25, 2005 3:28 pm

1) How do differences in concentration affect the rate of osmosis?

2)What would happen to a saltwater fish and its cells if you put it into a freshwater aquarium?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

1) First you need to understand what osmosis is. When there is a concentration difference between environment one and environment two, water flows between them, from the least concentrated one to the more concentrated one. The bigger the difference the faster the process
2) Depends on the fish. Some fish may diw because of this because their kidnees will eliminate all the salts in their body(that is the answer you will find in a bio book)
My personal opinion is that if you put the fish in tanks with falling salinity an leave it in each tank for a few weeks it will adapt. The the case of the samon- Salmo salar. It is a salt water fish migrates to fresh water to reproduce. Anguilla anguilla migrates to salt water to reproduce even if it is generally a fresh water fish. Artemis salina is a crustacian(not a fish) that can live in an environment with a higher salinity than the sea and it still has the same osmotic pressure as the sea
Hope this helps,
Andrew

it surely helped me
thanks!
but if we keep potato in four different beakers with different temperatures like 5, 20, 25 and 35. what will happen to the potato after ten min? will there be change in weight? :?

Yes. Water will osmose into the potatoes at different rates. The warmest water will enter the potato fastest, so after 10 minutes, it will be the heaviest.
