CyanobacteriaHullo...I am a newbie here
And I am a freshman in high school currently in Honors Biology...and we have really hardcore tests! Anyways...I was wondering about this: how can cyanobacteria have chlorophyll but not chloroplasts? What I mean is- how can it function and conduct photosyntesis without the 'factory' (chlorplast) to make its energy? Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you'll land among the stars!
Cyanobacteria have chlorophyll in its cytoplasm. And, yes they do not have chloroplasts. Think about procaryotes. They do respire, right? Photosynthesis is similar to this. It occurs in the cytoplasm.
It matters not how strait the gate

CytoplasmChloroplasts were bacteria in past , so I think, its less likely to find them in another bacteria. More over chloroplasts were photosynthetic bacteria and they contained minifactories called thylacoids in them which carried out light reaction and the cytoplasm carried out the dark reaction. The photosynthetic bacteria you are reffering to , too have thylacoids ,as per my knowledge . So, thylacoids carry out light reaction
while cytoplasm is the site for dark reaction. Some different type of vesicles similar to thylacoids maybe there in some kind of bacts. Thanks. hrushikesh
Thank-you very much to all of you! The confusion has been cleared up...

The main difference between Monera and everything else is they do not have organelles. SO, CIANOBACTERIA DO NOT HAVE CHLOROPLASTS!!! They do have clorophil, but it is not stored in the citoplasm, but in particles called mesosomes. They are simply vesicles formed by the cellular membrane.
