Postby staceyamelia » Tue Feb 07, 2006 10:01 pm

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could please explain to me the regulatory function of the pituitary gland and/or the mechanism of the regulation function? Help would be greatly appreciated. :D

Wow...that's a lot of info needed....maybe this will help you get started....

Pituitary: The Master Gland (There are three divisions) Located in the base of the brain.
A. Anterior Lobe- Adenohypophysis
1) GH: Growth Hormone- stimulates growth, targets most tissues
2) PRL: Prolactin- stimulates milk production (stimulated by suckling), targets mammary glands
3) TSH: Thyrotric Hormone (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)- stimulates and targets the thyroid
4) ACTH: Adrenocorticotropic – stimulates the adrenal gland, targets the adrenal cortex
5) FSH: Follicle Stimulating Hormone- stimulates gametogenesis, targets the ovaries (ripening of the ova) and testes (production of sperm)
6) LH: Leutenizing Hormone- stimulates corpus luteum, targets the ovaries (release of the ovum and secretion of progesterone) and testes (releasing androgens (male hormone) into the blood stream).
B. Intermediate Lobe:
1) MSH: Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone- stimulates the melanocytes
C. Posterior Lobe: Nuerohypophysis- Storage Lobe for the hormones produced by the hypothalamus
1) Oxytocin: Stimulates smooth muscle contraction of the uterus, placental separation and milk let down; targets the uterus and mammary glands
2) ADH: Anti-Diuretic Hormone (Vasopressin)- stimulates H20 resorption by kidneys, targets the kidney (Loop of Henle)
