Muscular painDuring a rigorous workout, my muscles might start to hurt. What causes this? Is the depleated tissue releasing substances that activate nociceptive neurons?
Yep. When working hard your muscle start to work in anaeorobiosis, which release lactic acid. This cause the pain, and ultimately cramps.

Try to get as much oxygen as possible. Breath deeply, and open to windows (or such) to let fresh air in. You will have them less. As Patrick said it is because of lactic acid formation in your muscles.
