Earlier i was reading an article and which mentioned how people with lighter skin synthesise vitamin D from the sun more easily than people with darker skin tones. I tried to look into this but i couldn't find an answer so i thought somewhere like here would be a good place to start. So my question is if people with lighter skin can synthesise vitamin D more easily, does this mean that people with darker skin are more susceptible to depression from vitamin D deficiency, or do people with darker skin naturally have a higher amount in their system to begin with?
This seems to be an area that is just beginning to draw research interest.
Darker skin evolved in high light-exposure populations to protect deeper skin layers from UV damage, but tones lightened in pops with lower exposure, to allow enough UV to reach the D-generating skin tissues. Dark-skinned people in lower-light areas almost certainly need D supplements (or extra UV exposure, which has some downside) of some sort. They don't make D another way.
There are two ways that you can get vitamin D by exposing your bare skin to sunlight and by captivating vitamin D complement. You can’t obtain the correct quantity of vitamin D your body requirements from food. It is able to be found in little quantity in a few foods, together with fatty fish like herring, mackerel, sardines and tuna. The amount of vitamin D you get from exposing your bare skin to the sun depends on:
The time of day – your skin produces more vitamin D if you expose it during the middle of the day.
Where you live – the closer to the equator you live, the easier it is for you to produce vitamin D from sunlight all year round.
The color of your skin – pale skins make vitamin D more quickly than darker skins.
The amount of skin you expose – the more skin your expose the more vitamin D your body will produce.
I'm not sure that a clear link between Vitamin D and depression is established - I haven't seen much attempt to control for issues like seasonal affective disorders and the like.
