I've had the same thing (sharp pain when breathing always on the left side) for about 9 years or so. Havent had it in about 3/4 months but tonight its so bad I cant draw enough breath to speak!!!!.

Did a quick google search and found this.

Anyway I went to a Doc about 5 years ago and was told it was probably a muscle strain and just live with it. Either way I'm going back tomorrow (Different Doc) cause its so bad tonight its scared both me and my wife.

I'll let you know what I find out (if anything)
