Is incest avoidance selected for?

Postby MadMax112 » Tue Feb 18, 2014 8:52 pm

Hi!

I was wondering, if incest avoidance or inbreeding avoidance is selected for! i know they are not the same thing, but in general, is it genetic? did natural selection select the genes that will create the avoidance behavior in organisms that reproduce sexually?

Since there is clear advantage of out-of-family breeding, probably yes.

Mice use pheromones to help select the least-related potential mates.
