I have done some research on ameba, mostly pathogenic organisms. The best site I have found for the study of these organisms is http://www.bms.ed.ac.uk/research/others/smaciver/amoebae.htm
My research involved mostly Acanthamoeba and Naegleria, both are deadly pathogens which occur naturally in our environment and are classified as BSL II (Biological Safety Level II) organisms. Should you begin to culture and study these organisms I would advise acquiring and following the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) related to the handling and storage of BSL II organisms. Self infection has never been noted but there is a first time for everything. :D
