info about biotechnology

hello...im a 16 year old interested in biology...im not soo great at it as all the pros in this forums...but i am really interested in this subject...i hope to be a specialist in biology..and i want to try out biotechnology...can you tell me what it really is about? and...while searching through google...i couldnt find much info on biotech, because there are so many diffrent types...was wondering if you guys could help me out here..just tell me anything i would understand plzzzzz...thanks

Biology+Technology = biotechnology. It's a big field. There should be a main site for the group though. And there should be a full list there.

Biotechology is a large field with many different applications,but it basically boils down to playing with genetics. Its not like stuff you see in Resident Evil or stuff like that, its more like messing around with bacterial DNA and trying to produce marketable chemicals (e.g. insulin). So if you are planning to harvest zombies, biotech. may not be your choice (maybe biochem will do the job??). I know a lot of people who just go into biotech. cause its new and hot these days (and also cuz it sounds cool). But a lot of times, its not really what you think. We deal with stuff like Fermentation industries (wine making), bioremediation, biodegradation, sewage treatment, food processing, biocatalyses... its fun in its own little way, haha

I agree its a massive field. I am due to graduate this summer from a biotechnology degree and still have no idea where I want to focus my research/work on.

A lot of people at first get confused between bioinformatics and biotechnology, thinking that what ever hast the word technology in it has something to with computers. That is bioinformatics, which no one really knows anything about seriously. On both sides anyway. Biotech is more just dealing with genetic engineering and the like. Like everything else in life, movies make it sound a lot more different to what it is. There's a lot of lab work and most of the time you're working with stuff you cannot physically see.
