Hello there!

Alright, i'm in grade 11 and i was given the instructions to "investigate a particular passive transport process in potatoes" ..i basicallt have to design a lab.. any ideas?

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated! :)

isn't osmosis the dissolving of a substance through a lesser concentration to a greater concentration, I think it has to do with something else

osmosis is the diffusion of water from less consentration to a greater consentration through a semi-permiable memebrane (like a cell membrane) which will happen until both consentrations are at an equal % of water. (or, of course, if something won't let it like active transport) This is how water moves through cell membranes.
There is a popular school lab (i think) showing osmossis only needs kinetic energy to move water, not cell energy. (=passive transport)
Diffusion is the movement of molecules from higher consentration to lesser consentration. Osmosis is diffusion refering to only water, basically.

Don't say that, it is a completely different mechanism

Just put the potato in water. By osmosis water will enter it's cells and you got your experiment. However i am not sure it will work :lol: :lol: :lol:

Any ideas what would happen if i dissolved various concentrations of sucrose into the water... would the sucrose enter the potatoe as well? :S

No, because aquaporines are ion channels=>very specific. And sucrose is hidrofil so it won't pss through the membrane. I don't know if it is big enough to go through a permease or if it goes through endocytosis...
