Functional intricacies of the thalamus

Hi, I'm currently studying aspects of the (mammalian) thalamus, does anyone know how information is filtered or filtered out, exactly? Is there a summation, or what are the factors that determine whether stimuli get through to the cortex or not? How does it work?

Any info or relevant links/literature would be helpful thank you.
